Time is optimal to change Man Utd's system - Amorim declares.

Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes was one of multiple first-team stars absent from the Boxing Day win against Newcastle.

Manager Ruben Amorim argues that switching Manchester United's formation due to media scrutiny would have meant "the end" for him.

For the first time against Newcastle United, Amorim ditched his customary back three setup with wide defenders and instead field an standard back four with two holding midfielders.

Amorim acknowledged this at times transformed into a six-man defensive block in the final stages as his side clung on for a victory - securing only their second-ever shutout of the season.

Although he once memorably stated that not even the Pope could pressure him to change his approach, Amorim insists the option to play with alternative formations has always been part of his strategy.

However, he emphasizes he could solely implement the change when his team were doing well enough - or else it would seem as if he was succumbing to outside pressure.

"When I came here last season, I recognized maybe I don't have the personnel to play well in a back three, but it was the start of a journey," he said.

"We were trying to build an identity. Today is a separate moment. We don't have a full complement of players, and we have to adapt, so they see the reason we are switching things up.

"The change isn't because of the influence of journalists, or the supporters.

"Whenever you talk about changing the formation repeatedly, I can't make a change because the players will believe I'm altering things because of external voices and I believe that is the end for the manager.

"Once we are playing well in our system, that becomes the opportunity to change.

"We are going to develop into a better squad because when our full complement of personnel are back, we are not planning to employ three defenders exclusively."

Availability Issues Persist

With only two victories in eight games prior to beating Newcastle, it is debatable whether Amorim is accurate to claim his side have been playing well.

He is, however, operating with a severely stretched roster, with seven first-team stars already unavailable for the upcoming fixture against winless Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That total will increase if playmaker Mason Mount fails to recover the injury that forced his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is a key name who will miss the Wolves match, even though he is reportedly urging his manager to let him to make a comeback after his muscle problem.

"Fernandes is already saying he needs to practice," said Amorim. "However there is no chance he is going to play against Wolves. No way. That's definitive."

The Captain's Influence Endures

However, the 31-year-old will likely still be deeply engaged, as while most unavailable players view matches from a private box, Fernandes was spotted monitoring the warm-ups from the entrance of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his leader to carry on offering guidance.

"He is a leader," he affirmed. "He cannot be that guy that when he is absent, he's silent and speaking. He's constantly speaking. That is the reason he's the captain.

"He has negative aspects at times - his mannerisms he moves his arms - but he has a lot of positive qualities. Even after he recovers, he goes to watch the other guys practicing. There are a many aspects you don't see.

"I'm not sure if he desires my position or not, but he's a born leader. The guy is a true captain."

Recovery Timeline for Key Personnel

While the precise timeline for Fernandes' return - and that of fellow injured players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains uncertain, by the end of January, the club will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from continental duty.
