Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to starting weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
