Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor
In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
