The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.
This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a document approving the detention, the judge said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His son, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of his move to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
