The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
