Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
